Assumptions of social case work

Assumptions of social casework

The following are the assumptions in all the accepted definitions.
  • The individual and society are inter-dependent.
  • Social forces influence behavior and attitudes;
  • Problems are psycho-social; they have inner and outer aspects;
  • Problems are interpersonal that is more than one person is likely to be involved in the treatment of the individual;
  • The client is a responsible participant at every step in the solution. of his problems;
  • The worker-client relationship is also used to achieve the ends of treatment,
  • It is also assumed that the worker will have to enable the client to release his capacities for change and growth
  • Only when the worker is well-grounded psychologically, he can help the client to mobilize his feelings in the direction of growth and adaptation to reality.

According to Hamilton the basic assumptions of social casework are:
  • Individuals and society are interdependent and complementary to each other.
  • Various factors are operative in society influence human behavior and attitude.
  • Some problems are psychological and some are interpersonal.
  • Within certain limits, man can be understood and helped.
  • Man can grow and change as per his/her inherent capacities and potentials.
  • Every person is unique as well as similar to others.

Philosophical assumptions are:
  • Every human being has to be considered as a person with dignity and worth.
  • Human beings are interdependent and it governs their interaction in social groups.
  • There are common human needs for the growth and development of individuals. The existence of common human needs does not negate the uniqueness of the individual. Every individual is like all other human beings in some aspects and like no other individual in certain aspects.
  • Every individual has within him/her, the potential for growth achievement and s/he has the right to the realization of this potential. Form this it follows that people have the capacity to change.
  • Society has an obligation to help those who do not have the means for the realization of their potentials.
  • From the assumption, it will help in understanding the team climate of the team and how to create a favorable climate within the organization using social casework methods on team members for better team functioning. Casework is one such method that social workers use to help people of all ages and from various sections of society to enhance their social functioning and to cope more effectively. The Casework will help to understand social functioning within the team and will also interpret the team functioning for team effectiveness.
  • It also helps to understand team members behavior as individuals and the unique pattern that emerges from their interaction is individual personality, which comprises of their capacities and abilities, attitudes, beliefs and values, feelings and thinking and their approach, or strategies to deal with various situations of their life within team. The unresolved problems would affect the social functioning of an individual, which will, in turn, cause stress to the individual, affect his family and community life and all the social roles which s/he performs in the society as well as members of the team and their team effectiveness.

Given below are the philosophical assumptions that govern the practice of social casework. These are evolved based on the premise of human rights and social justice which are fundamental to social work practice.
  • Dignity: It is the fundamental value of democracy. It is the belief in the capability of the individual to contribute to society. Every individual has dignity and should be given due respect as a socially productive and personally gratifying individual.
  • Self- Determination: It is the belief in the inherent capability of the individual to make decisions in life and the potential ability to change and cope with problems.
  • Problem-Solving Process: This refers to the procedural methodology employed to address the problems of a person. The caseworker does not imply his/her thoughts in working with the person but based on the scientific inquiry applies the relevant techniques, and travels along with the person through a process and builds his/her capabilities to cope with the demands of his /her social functioning.
  • Based on Needs: Casework is a response to the deficiencies arising in the life of a person. All individuals have common, specific and unmet needs in their living space that cause distress to them. Social casework aims to work on these unfulfilled needs and finds alternatives to address them.
  • Problems: The intrinsic nature of a problem is that it is dynamic, varied, unique, profuse, multidimensional and ever-growing.
